Have you ever bought a book, started reading it and then realised you have already read it? If so, how far did you get? (Can you tell this happened to me for the first time ever this week!?!)
And–did you keep reading??
While I have never purchased a book and had this happen, it happened, OK happens, when I take books out of the library. Usually I rememeber a few pages in and stop reading. There is not enough time to read without rereading, never mind with rereading. I reread very rarely and only books which are in favorites or that are in a series and I need to remind myself of the storyline before I move on. (1)
The most memorable time this happened it was a mystery. I can’t remember which one, which makes this even funnier. But I plowed through this book and about 2 pages from the reveal and maybe 15 pages from the end I remembered. I remembered the book, who did it and how it ended. It was crazy frustrating. I wished I had not remembered. All I could think was that was 100s of pages wasted. I put the book down, never finished it that second time. And if you look at my past year’s reading lists you will notice a lack of mysteries. It is not a genre I read. I might have just figured out why.
(1) Recently I was complaining to a dear friend about how I love the Outlander series but there are now so many of them and they are so big and it takes so long between them I can’t justify rereading 6 huge books just to read the next huge book. She looked at me, shook her head and said “You know there are summaries on Wikipedia.” <headdesk>
