One of my favorite moments came when we were first in NYC. The Girl had a death grip on my hand as we walked through Penn Station and into the city. She didn’t let go as we went to see Time Square and then began walking from there to Fifth Avenue at 42nd Street. It was not until she saw Patience and Fortitude, the NYC Public Library lions, that she let go and ran to the base of one of them and looked up in awe. We looked around a bit inside and out and got to see the free exhibit The ABC of It: Why Children’s Books Matter. We got to see some lovely displays, the original manuscript of The Secret Garden and some original prints of the art from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. A personal favorite, however, was getting to see the original Winnie the Pooh and friends. When we left the library The Girl’s hand did not grip mine quite so tightly and she leaned in and whispered “New York is not so scary now that I have been to the library.” I love that girl and her love for the library.
