ArmchairBEA 2014 – Novellas/Short Stories

Every year there is one day of ABEA that just does not float my boat. Today is that day. I am tired of trying to “reinvent” my blog to make is zippier or more appealing. I like my design. I like my memes. I like my weekly reviews.

Also I am not a fan of the short story. Anthologies frustrate me. Usually they are so uneven I cannot love or hate the book. I love a story or I hate a story but the overall feeling I am then left with is “meh.”

So what do you do?  Every year I try to find some way to turn the topics around into something I am interested in. And today after much stewing on it, as you can tell from my very late posting, I finally hit on it. While I do not like short stories I am sort of fascinated by short shorts, the super short story, the flash story and even the micro story. So today I will link to some of my favorites. (and because they are short, none will take you long to read!)

Nicholas Was… by Neil Gaiman

“Happy Endings” by Margaret Atwood

The Open Window by H. H. Munro (Saki) (1870-1916)

The Vestal Review

Two Sentence Stories

Six Word Stories

  1. I’m with you. Yesterday’s topics weren’t really my thing either. I came up with a few collections of stories I’ve enjoyed through the years, but was seriously wandering my apartment hunting through the bookshelves to do it. Short shorts do sound interesting, though, so I’m going to check your recommendations out tonight.
