2. The Blogger Behind the Blog
Oh, Lord. This is my worst nightmare question. This is the first day of class “Introduce yourself and tell the Class a bit about yourself” moment. For someone who is awkward around strangers that was the very worse moment of every single class ever. But here goes nothing.
I am a stay at home, recovering academic. I taught at both large universities, small universities and local community colleges. My area was Sociology with a specialization in Criminology, Juvenile Delinquency and Social Deviance. I have lived all over, Long Island, NY, Washington, DC, Tucson, AZ and now West Virginia.
Anyone who has ever been to grad school knows that reading for pleasure falls quickly by the way side. You still read all the time but nothing that is fiction or fun.So I went from reading fiction all the time to never picking up anything but textbooks and academic reading. The first few years of teaching are also a blur of student work and research papers. When I quit teaching the first time it was to raise my girls. Well, anyone who has had small people enter their lives will tell you that that is also not conducive to reading. “The baby is sleeping, then so am I.”
About 7 years ago, I was able to pick up reading again and until last year I was hitting 50 books easy, some years topping 100. This year I have not read nearly that much. Many things have contributed to it. But running has been the major thing. As i mentioned I will be talking about how this sit on the couch with a tea and a book person became a spend two hours a day running and working out person.
