Happy New Year

I love the promise of a blank page, a clean slate, starting over. So today I we be posting my challenge successes and failures and tomorrow I will be starting with a clean slate.

My total number of Challenges was 17 two were personal and there were 15 external challenges.

I am pretty happy with that. As for how successful or how much I failed? Pictures are always better.

This showed me that I underestimated the amount of Young Adult and Fantasy I read and that I never, hardly ever, read things I purchase or that I know I should read.

2011 5 Star Reads

It was a good year of reading. I met most of my self imposed goals and successfully completed most of my challenges. I will post more about them next week. For today I wanted to list the 5 star reads of 2011.  Honestly, some of these have made it into my all time favorites list. Both of Lev Grossman’s books are ones I will read again and again. The Night Circus made me want to run away and join the most colorful black and white world ever. Ready Player One made me long for money and time to find people like Ernie Cline and spend time fan-girling with them. And Godmother, well, Godmother is one of the books that has made me believe that fairy tales can still be told skillfully and with heart.

HAPPY NEW YEAR and many, many good books in your 2012!

Christmas Quotes

This is the second year I have done Quotes on Christmas. I like it. At year three does it become a tradition?

I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old, familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet
The words repeat
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
– Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

“I do like Christmas on the whole… In its clumsy way, it does approach Peace and Goodwill. But it is clumsier every year.”

– E.M. Forster

It comes every year and will go on forever. And along with Christmas belong the keepsakes and the customs. Those humble, everyday things a mother clings to, and ponders, like Mary in the secret spaces of her heart.

– Marjorie Holmes

“And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow,
stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and puzzled ’till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store. What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more.”
― Dr. Seuss

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house

Not a creature was stirring – not even a mouse:

The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,

In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there.

– Clement C. Moore

Blessing on you and yours today and every day.

Christmas Countdown Wishlist XXIII

Recently I was talking to The Girl about crushes.  I asked her if there was anyone on TV or in the movies that she has a crush on.  I remember at about her age I was madly in love with a Mr. Shaun Cassidy.  We were driving and she sort of hemmed and ummed a bit before she told me “No, but I sometimes get crushes on guys in books.”  It made this Momma proud.

Without to much poking I discovered one of the crushes was Peeta.  Double proud, my girl rocks!
